fine,” says Waters. “But bustards have to be bill-fed.” After a period of quarantine in a special enclosure, they will eventually be released. The enclosure is open-topped to allow them to fly out to colonise surrounding fields. The immigrants have been taught to avoid both man and predators such as foxes using aversion therapy. Volunteers walk through the pen with dogs on leads, and if the birds don't scatter, they bang tin lids or squirt them with water pistols. Adults are, in fact, usually too big to be at risk from foxes. Human egg thieves are a bigger threat, although Waters is not too concerned: “As well as military police, the police, wardens and gamekeepers...there will be a small army of well-wishers and bird-watchers,” he says. “On top of that, half the birds will be radio tagged and all will be fitted with wing tags which can be read from a distance.” For conservationists, the real prize will be the first successful breeding season. Bustards are generally very solitary, only meeting at leks in spring when the males gather to dance competitively, displaying their fluffy wing and tail feathers to the females. After a brief copulation, the two parents stalk different paths with the female laying her two or three eggs in an arable field. When these hatch, she marches her clutch to rough pasture where she feeds them on insects, small rodents and vegetation. The chicks grow very quickly but the males suffer high mortality. “On the other hand,” says Waters, “they are long-lived if they survive and far fewer males than females are needed for breeding.” But Waters concedes he doesn’t know when to expect the new wave of British bustards: “Females can breed in their first year, while males don’t normally succeed until they are four or five,” he says. This is because they are usually out-danced by older males. “Our birds will have no competition so they could start much earlier. If they do, it won’t be before time.” Quick guide

The cell biology of mammalian fertilization.

Fertilization is the process by which eggs and spermatozoa interact, achieve mutual recognition, and fuse to create a zygote, which then develops to form a new individual, thus allowing for the continuity of a species. Despite numerous studies on mammalian fertilization, the molecular mechanisms underpinning the fertilization event remain largely unknown. However, as I summarize here, recent wo...

Pervasive adaptive evolution in mammalian fertilization proteins.

Mammalian fertilization exhibits species specificity, and the proteins mediating sperm-egg interactions evolve rapidly between species. In this study, we demonstrate that the evolution of seven genes involved in mammalian fertilization is promoted by positive Darwinian selection by using likelihood ratio tests (LRTs). Several of these proteins are sperm proteins that have been implicated in bin...

Fertilization: a sperm's journey to and interaction with the oocyte.

Mammalian fertilization comprises sperm migration through the female reproductive tract, biochemical and morphological changes to sperm, and sperm-egg interaction in the oviduct. Recent gene knockout approaches in mice have revealed that many factors previously considered important for fertilization are largely dispensable, or if they are essential, they have an unexpected function. These resul...

P-65: Maternal Effect Genes in Mammalian Reproduction

Background: Regulation of gene expression in mammalian embryos is not completely known. Pre-implantation embryos need maternal RNA and proteins synthesized during oogenesis, to regulate development before mater-embryo transition, as the grown oocyte and the 1-cell zygote are transcriptionally silent. There are some oocyte-specific genes called maternal effect genes which may account for this ea...

P-91: The Effects of Mesenchymal StemCell- Conditioned Medium on The Fertilization Rate and Embryo Development inNMRI Mice

Background: Normal growth of oocytes, embryos and also successful implantation depend on environmental factors such as the secretion of cumulus cells and composition of follicular and tubular fluids. Therefore, addition of serum, conditioned medium (CM) to the culture medium and also co-culture with somatic cells improve mammalian embryo development. So, in the respect to the secretion of diffe...

Ultrastructural aspects of mammalian fertilization: new discoveries and inspirations from the work of Daniel Szöllösi.

Our current level of knowledge on mammalian fertilization would not be attained without the contribution of ultrastructural studies. The late Daniel Szöllösi, to whose memory this review is dedicated, was one of the most enthusiastic explorers of this fascinating field. In his landmark electron microscopic studies, he revealed the importance of nuclear envelope breakdown for oocyte maturation a...
